In this session, Claus will share selected exercises from his upcoming book Collapsed Rudiments, demonstrated on both the practice pad and the drum set. The material is designed to challenge your rhythmic awareness, sharpen your listening skills, and reveal unexpected relationships between rudimental patterns that may initially seem unrelated. You’ll explore how these concepts translate into musical vocabulary, opening new pathways for coordination, phrasing, and creative application on the instrument.
“Claus Hessler is the leading proponent of the collapsed/expanded rudiment concept. Drumming guru Jim Chapin developed the idea and Claus has developed the concept to an artform. Practicing and mastering these stickings and rhythms is beneficial in learning how closely related what were previously thought of as unrelated rhythms and stickings. I’ve expanded my rhythmic pallette by working on a number of the collapsed/expanded rudiments and I look forward to working on more! Thank you Claus for developing this innovative idea.”
