In this summer practice session we’ll explore Khanda Nadai – the South Indian concept of creating rhythms in the flow of five subdivisions per beat.
To begin with are going to take a look at a typical transition from the standard-setting of 4 subdivisions per beat (Chatusra Nadai) to quintuplets (Khanda Nadai). After landing on the first beat of the given time cycle, we will practice a characteristic quintuplet groove with its variations and then round it off with a traditional cadence – quintessentially in Khanda Nadai.
