Five Notes per Beat | Exploring Quintuplets in Carnatic Rhythm

In this practice session, we dive into Khanda Nadai – the South Indian rhythmic concept based on five subdivisions per beat.

We begin by exploring a typical transition from the standard four subdivisions per beat (Chatusra Nadai) into quintuplets (Khanda Nadai). After landing on the first beat of the cycle, we work through a characteristic quintuplet groove, explore some variations, and finish with a traditional cadence – all rooted in Khanda Nadai.
